The Upward Call Of God

(Philippians 3: 10 – 16):

Business womanThe beginning of a new year is a time for setting goals.  Business journals regularly tell us that for goals to be effective, they must be S.M.A.R.T. – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely.

The Apostle Paul set a goal as well, a spiritual goal towards which he pressed, as real as any goal of sales, finances, or athletic achievement.  He explained that goal in his letter to the Philippians:  I press towards the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (3: 14).

Was this goal S.M.A.R.T.?

It certainly was SPECIFIC, as it focused on Jesus Christ.  Paul wanted to know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His suffering (3: 10)

It was also MEASURABLE.  Paul wrote about the degree that we have already attained (3: 16)He saw spiritual growth as real as physical growth.

And it was ATTAINABLE.   Nothing that God has promised us in Christ will fail.  One day we will indeed lay hold of that for which Christ laid hold of me (3: 12) – we will realize everything of the salvation that Jesus Christ died to give us.

It was certainly REALISTIC.  In fact, it is inevitable.  Paul was forgetting those things that are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead (3: 13)and what is ahead is the coming of Christ.

Finally, it was TIMELY.  Paul knew that he had not already attained (3: 12).  He was not there – yet.  And so he pressed on, always looking forward.

Altogether, The Upward Call of God in Christ Jesus is the SMARTest goal we can set for 2015.
