Never Get Too Busy To Vacation

| April 23, 2018

Genesis 2:3b says it best –“because that in it He had rested from all His work which God created and made.”

Rest and Relaxation is necessary according to God Himself as written in the book of beginnings.  So put down your cell phone, turn off your WIFI and remember the important things that God blessed you with, and reconnect with His Creation. Basking in the sun, enjoying the sandy beaches and enjoying the surf is one of the supreme joys many of us think of when dreaming about vacationing. Fewer things can sooth a frozen soul than a day on the beach. Before you grab your towel and head for the seashore, take a moment to find out why vacations are so essential and not to be overlooked because we are too busy. Here are some reasons you should be making them a priority in your life.

Stress Relief: Chronic stress can be destructive to our bodies. In our modern lifestyle we are constantly bombarded by stress that is damaging our bodies and our minds. Taking a vacation and leaving our every day stresses behind gives us a break from the constant high levels of stress hormones and a chance to repair some of the damage. Stress is also a leading factor in our susceptibility to illness according to Psychoneuroimmunology which finds that stress and its adrenal dysfunction can alter one’s immune system. Chronic stress is also believed to accelerate biologic aging and the aging process, so stay young and use your vacation time!

Help to Prevent Heart Disease: It should be no surprise that stress is one of the major contributors to heart disease and high blood pressure. According to Long-term studies both men and women have shown that vacations can reduce the risk of heart disease and heart attack. Men who vacationed regularly were more than 32% less likely to die from a heart attack. For women who vacation regularly, that figure jumps to 50% less likely to die from a heart attack. (2010 Framingham Heart Study)

Maintain Focus: There have been recent studies that have found that chronic stress can affect the part of the brain that inhibits goal-directed activities and causes problems with memory. You know the saying “all work and no play”, working continuously with no breaks or vacations leads to people feeling distracted, and have problems concentrating. Surveys show almost three-quarters of people who vacation regularly feel energized and more ready to tackle the tasks at hand.

Stronger Relationships: Family vacations create more memories than any other activity, helping families to forge closer bonds.  In fact, studies have found people place a higher value on the shared experiences they have on vacations than the material goods they have acquired during their lifetime.

Increase Productivity At Work: Studies have shown a direct correlation between more vacation time actually increasing worker’s productivity, along with decreasing the number of sick days taken off. Many workers report feeling more creative after taking time off, and more than 70% report feeling more satisfied with their jobs when they took regular vacations.

So now you know why vacations are a necessity for a well-balanced, healthy life, make sure you are prepared to enjoy your day at the beach! Nothing is worse than finally finding the perfect beach spot and then realizing you forgot the sunscreen. Now, I am not going to bore you with the obvious things that we all know that we need to bring – you know, like sunscreen, bug spray, sun hats/umbrellas, beach towels/blankets, water and snacks. Instead here is a list of some items that will make your day at the beach more enjoyable:

  • Waterproof  Bluetooth Speaker. Sometimes the tranquility can get, well too quiet. Liven up the afternoon with some tunes.
  • Book, Crossword Puzzle or Sudoku. No explanations needed here.
  • Kites. No power lines and plenty of open space make flying a kite at the beach an awesome idea.
  • Sun or Beach Tent. This is an especially good idea if you have toddlers. It will give them a chance to get out of the sun and catch some rest safe and sound.
  • Binoculars. Great for spotting that blip on the horizon. Is it a boat, a whale or a mermaid? Well, now you’ll know.

Choose the Best Time to Go to the Beach

According to, “the sun is the most intense between 10 AM and 4 PM.” While most sunbathers flock to the beach mid-morning, consider going early to beat the crowds and get the best spot. If you do not have young children and want a real experience, come right before dawn and watch the sunrise. A thermos of coffee and some Britt’s Donuts will make the experience even more glorious.

You can always come back for a late afternoon swim and a picnic dinner on the beach. Bring a sweatshirt and a change of clothes and enjoy the cool evening breeze and the cry of the seagulls.

Being prepared, packing for fun and choosing the best time can make your beach experience go from fun to fabulous!
